Today I attended a Memorial Day ceremony in my hometown. One of the speakers at the ceremony mentioned that many people think of Memorial Day as merely a good day for a barbecue. Barbecues are great, but it is also important to think about the reason for this holiday. Memorial Day is a day to remember people who died in military service.
One traditional way this has been done is to decorate soldiers’ graves with flowers. After the ceremony today, we were each given a flower to decorate the city’s Veteran’s Memorial. This was a new experience for me. It felt beautiful and special and sacred to add my flower to the memorial.
I wish you a great Memorial Day. However you celebrate your day, I hope you also get some time to remember.
